The next MK Filmclub event is Lars von Trier: Breaking the waves. This is a colour, English-language, subtitled Danish, French, Icelandic, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch drama, 159 minutes long, from 1996.
Synopsis: Bess is a deeply religious girl who marries Jan, while maintaining her innocence. He works as an oil worker at sea and he feels stranger in the closed community which she belongs. When she learns of his physical pleasures, she can’t get enough of him, but Jan’s return to the rig is a shock to the woman in love. Bess spends her days in expectation, praying nightly for her husband’s speedy return. Her prayers are answered and Jan returns home, but a serious accident has left her paralysed. It is a real test for them both, but love is a powerful force that can work wonders. Bess, obeying her inner voice, unconditionally complies with the increasingly perverse wishes of her immobilised husband.
