Budapest, Pilisvörösvár and Pécs is the best places to live in Hungary in 2023, according to MBH Mortgage Bank’s Hungarian Livability Ranking, which this year includes six areas that were not in the top ten last year.
The experts looked at education, health, culture, crime, the labour market, shopping opportunities and housing affordability to see what the nation’s 174 districts and Budapest have to offer. The survey found that education, labour market and shopping opportunities are better in Western Hungary and around the larger cities, while housing is easier to find in the Eastern regions, despite typically lower salaries.
The capital’s score was again significantly higher than the second place, but the rest of the top ten were only separated by tenths of a point. Pécs and its surroundings were not in the top ten last year, but this year they are third. In the fourth place is Debrecen and its surroundings. In fifth place is Veszprém and its region.
The top ten also include Szeged, Budakeszi, Győr and the Dunakeszi area and the district of Bácsalmás, which has just jumped up from the middle of the rankings and is also in the top ten. However, the districts of Érd, Bóly, Kisbér, Pécsvárad, Tata and Mórahalom have been eliminated from the top ten.
The areas in the top ten score highly on one or two indicators, but in other respects they are towards the bottom of the field.
Overall, larger cities score better in infrastructure and services such as education, culture, health and labour market characteristics, but their scores are dragged down by crime and affordability– as the survey found.
